Along with Economic Collapse and global terror, the threat of Nuclear, Chemical and Biological weapons being used against us we have to consider things like another Katrina, tornados, earthquakes, floods, fires, asteroid strike, tsunami and much MUCH more.

And the difference is do you want to be one of the huddled masses (if you survive) in a mile long line waiting for a government food/water hand out - or do you want to be prepaired, relatively comfortable with food, water and most important SAFE?

NO we are NOT saying anything will happen on 12-21-2012 the Mayan calendar ends on that date and they and others predict some catastrophe on that date, but they are not specific about how or what will happen. But an economic collapse can happen at any time and most experts say it's NOT (will it happen), but (WHEN will it happen). And economic pointers say it could happen - any time! (Hours, Days, Weeks, Months NOT Years). Even the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank are talking publicly about the comimg Economic Collapse and preparing for it. You know IF they are talking like that it is coming and soon!

When the economy collapses your dollars will be worthless, stores and gas stations will close, power plants will shut down, public communications will stop. People will riot in the streets for food & water it will be gangs running the streets taking what they want and killing anyone who gets in there way.

No one knows when it all started going wrong but like a giant snowball rolling down hill we are picking up steam, more and more things are going wrong, more and more problems heaped onto what we already have and like the Titanic (Damn the ice burgs full speed ahead).

And we all know how that ended and that's how it will end for us with a loud crash when we hit the ice burg, then it will be every rat for themselves as everyone rushes to abandon ship taking what they can.

Think about what you need to survive (BARE NECESSITIES). FOOD, WATER, SHELTER, LIGHTS, WEAPONS, CLOTHING a way to COOK FOOD, a way to HEAT your home or shelter, a way to USE THE BATHROOM and deal with that waste and SEEDS for planting next years food. MEDICAL conditions you need to address NOW and medications you need.

We added POWER to the list as power is a necessity in some form and in some amount we all need power to survive. We are adding blank lines to our list and you need to think about what YOU are going to do to address each issue (the best you can) print this page and put it on paper and then look at it each and every day, as time is short, and every day you need to do something to prepare...

1. FOOD – You can find lots of sites that offer MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat), canned goods, Nitrogen Packed foods such as Beans, Peas, Rice etc. At this time you need to think about storage and ease of preparing the food. If you are underground you will not be able to start a fire to cook or heat meals so the MRE’s with meal heaters will be a big help. IF you don’t plan on being underground a long time than nitrogen packed foods will store a long time. It’s time to buy almost anything bulk that will keep a while. Canned vegetables, meats, fruits are a must. And you should add a supply of Energy Bars they offer fast nutrition and will keep a long time and are easy to eat as they require no cooking.

Spaghetti is a good thing, you can buy bulk spaghetti and then the small to medium size cans of spaghetti sauce which you can store until needed. Canned spaghetti sauce has about a 3 year shelf life, jars on the other hand have only one year shelf life. If you use speghetti sauce in jars be sure to rotate your stock so you are storing the newest stock and using the oldest stock on your shelves.

You can use about anything that you just add a little water to, to make a meal, like Stove Top Stuffing, Macaroni & Cheese, Ramen noodles, Rice-a-Roni etc. These can be stored for a long time too, and take very little water to prepare but you do need to heat the water to make most of these meals. What we are recommending is that you cover all options and buy some MRE's, some storable foods in bulk, some canned goods etc. And don't forget seeds to grow next years food.

You can still buy a 20 pound bag of rice at Walmart for just over $10.00 and rice keeps a long time with out any special handeling. Also you can buy 50 pound bags of rice at Sam's Club for $18.83 and 50 pounds of Pinto beans for $$37.13 with similar prices at Costco. I have rice I eat today that I bought back in 1999 and it's every bit as good as the rice I buy today. The only down side to buying rice is it takes water to cook and you have to cook rice a long time to prepare it. If you store rice, prepare for cooking it. You could buy a small cheap camp stove and store small bottles of propane to cook with. Also many bar-B-Q grills have an extra burner to the side that would be great to cook on outdoors. You will need to buy extra bottles of Propane, how many bottles is up to you.

Note: if you store rice be sure to store some sugar also, rice alone is very bland. Also you will not need to Nitrogen pack rice, beans or peas as these items will store a very long time without the nitrogen as long as you keep them dry and not to warm. Also think about what is good over rice to make a meal, like canned soups, beef stew, rice & beans etc. A little planning and a few extra dollars can make your stay a whole lot more plesant. Also people like beans many different ways some plain some with corn bread, peppers, vinagar, hot sauce etc. So you can add these items to your list of storable items and you can have your beans many different ways.

Also if you want bread you will need a wheat grinder which you can buy on Ebay for around $30.00. Flour stored has a very short shelf life and tends to have bugs shortly after it is stored and goes bad quickly, but wheat stored as a grain has 20 year plus shelf life. So if you buy a flour grinder and make your own flour you can make your own bread, just be sure to buy a supply of yeast so your bread will rise. Also you can make this bread on top of a wood stove with the right kind of cover for your bread pans. You can find all kinds of recipes but be careful as most call for milk, eggs etc. which you may not have if your power is out for long term. A simple recipe calling for only flour and yeast and things you have on hand will do the trick nicely.

2. WATER – Water should be number one because you can go about 3 weeks without food but only about 3 days without water. So, you will need to know where you can get water and have a way to filter that water (if needed). And a good idea is to have a back up plan just in case your water supply drys up or is no longer available (a back-up for the back-up).
Water filters come in all shapes, styles, varieties, price range etc. You will need to research and choose the filter that will suite your needs best. The idea of going to your kitchen sink to get a cold glass of water may not be possible if you discover your power is out long term.

You will need a water filter that filters out spores, mold, viruses, bacteria as well as chemicals, heavy metals etc. You may be forced to drink from a stream, lake, pond, swimming pool etc. So be prepared for it. Most camping type water filters filter out most harmful things but do not filter out virus contaminates as they are to small to filter. One way you can kill virus germs is to treat it with clorine either chlorine bleach (6 drops per gal.) or calcium hypochlorite (see below). The use of the SteriPen will kill virus germs but DO NOT remove contaminates such as heavy metals, pesticides, chlorine etc. (So if you use a SteriPen you should still filter your water (if those contaminates are in question) before you drink or cook with it.

If you have a water well now you could prepare with a hand pump or a bank of batteries and an inverter to power your water pump in case you have no power. Don’t forget you will need a way to recharge the batteries so you can keep pumping water every day. Weather you use solar panels or a wind generator we suggest you use both (just in case) and have a back up hand crank or peddle crank generator just in case.

As for Food you can go about a week plus without food but without water you can ONLY go about 3 days without water - so water, good clean water and several sources to get it and filter it should take a very high priority on your list.
Remember the saying “If It Can Go Wrong, It Probably Will”. So, when it comes to water have several sources. Know where a well is at and how to get it from the well with out grid power. Know where the local stream, pond, lake or swimming pool is from you.
And be prepared to filter all the water you drink from these sources. Also you will need a LARGE supply of water filters because when you run out – YOUR OUT OF WATER!

One very nice filter is the Berkey water filter. You can buy just the filters and mount these in the bottom of a 5 gal. food grade plastic pail and filter the water into a waiting pail below. These filters can filter up to 6000 gallons of water (per pair of filters) much more than your average camp water filter making the extra cost well worth the price. You can find these on Ebay for about $107.00 for a pair of these black Berkey filters.

What some people are doing is saving old plastic milk jugs, rinsing them out and storing water in them with about 6 drops of bleach in each jug to insure freshness and that it don't grow anything you don't want in it. How many, is up to you...

3. SHELTER - I guess you could set at home and tough it out. Or you could be a little bit prepared and store your supplies in a basement corner and reinforce the ceiling above. OR you could dig an underground shelter and call it a storm shelter. There are companies that can help you with storm shelters but keep in mind you will need ventilation and room for all your supplies and yourselves so a bigger shelter will be more feasible and comfortable and necessary if it turns into a long term stay in the shelter.
IF you go the underground shelter route I would NOT be bragging about your emergency shelter to family, neighbors, co-workers and friends. Also it would be advisable to conceal any vents and entrances to your shelter.
Some people ask about caves. Caves are great if they are deep enough and you have a way to close the door so-to-speak. Most people do not have access to a cave, if you do that's great. Just ask yourself is it deep enough and can you seal it off from the outside, if so you have a ready made shelter. You can stock your cave and be prepared.
Most people know about caves off somewhere. This may not work as a lot of people know about the popular caves and so a generally known cave could become crowded with you on the outside trying to get in.

4. LIGHTS – IF you have a bank of 12 volt batteries and solar panels and wind chargers etc. than you will have no problem in installing 12 volt lighting in your survival shelter. We do recommend LED or Florescent lights as they use much less power than typical incandescent lights. We also recommend you have a storage box built outside your shelter and under ground as well to store your batteries in and then run your wiring into your shelter as storage batteries produce Hydrogen gas which is explosive when exposed to a flame or spark.
Also you can buy hand crank powered LED lights, lanterns, radios (with LED lights etc.) this way as for lighting you will have a back up and a back up for the back up.
Cause, when the lights go out, YOUR IN THE DARK. And that’s no place to be underground & in the dark.

LED lights are the way to go they use super low current and typically in a 12 volt situation use from 1 watt to 6 watts and up. There is a new SMD super LED that puts out tremendous Lumens (candlepower) and with a frosted globe you can't tell the difference between the LED's and the incandescent bulbs (with some lights). And for saving power even compared to the flouresent you still save about half of the wattage when you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. LED is the way to go for the small home/cabin solar power system. You can have a lot more light and power to spare.

5. WEAPONS – I am not here to tell you to buy this over that but only that you should have some kind of pistol with a lot of stopping power for close in confrontations and a high powered rifle and a shotgun and lots of ammo for all three. I consider this a minimum of firearms and the amount of ammunition you have on hand depends on you.
I am not condoning or asking you to do anything illegal. Check your local laws on weapons availability. As for use of weapons, let your conscious be your guide. If someone or a group of people were intent on stealing your food and you and your family needed that food to survive what would you do? The people who didn’t prepare now want to take it away from the people who did prepare and it could be every man/woman for themselves.
I hope this is NOT the case but I am afraid it very well could be. I hope you never find yourself in a position where you have to defend your family, water or your food from other people.

How do you tell friend from foe? That is the question, people are social animals and desire contact with other humans, it’s only natural, but beware of the danger you face when meeting someone for the first time. At least make the first meeting on your own ground/turf, so you have friends watching your back. A new friend can turn out to be your best friend and bring new needed skills and/or supplies to your group OR can turn into your worst nightmare.

Guard Duty will be a very important job, as important as the gardner because if you don't have a guard you may not have anything to guard. Guards who pull all night duty must be able to sleep during the day, so arraingments must be made for that. Guards on the outer perimeter must be armed, guards in the inner perimeter may or may not be armed. This all depends on how many you have in your group and how big an area you have.

6. CLOTHING – Clothing is a necessity and what to wear is up to you but keep in mind you may not be able to wash them very often, so they should be rugged, sturdy and dependable. As we said, no one really knows what will happen so be prepared for hot weather or "COLD" weather. So do not forget your cold weather gear. Changes of clothing is good but actually depends on how much storage room you have available.

7. COOKING if you use a camp stove you will need to put in a supply of fuel for cooking purposes and who knows for how long you will need it, so be prepared with a couple camp stoves and lots of fuel for them.
WARNING: All cooking with an open flame should be done outdoors OR with adequate ventilation. Never, Ever cook underground with any type of flame or glowing embers etc. There are 12 volt cooking devices for heating meals underground or use MRE’s. (Meals Ready to Eat with Meal Heaters) It’s better to have a cold meal and be alive than have a hot meal and die for it. And for cooking you have to consider how to clean up the pots, pans, plates, spoons etc. You need to give that some consideration also.

What I have is a propane double burner camp cook stove, which you can find on Ebay or Harbor Freight for about $30.00 and I hook that up to a couple of 100 lb. propane tanks and I am good to go. It may not be pretty but I can still cook my rice & beans. And in the winter I move the fuel line through the wall to cook indoors to recover the heat and in the summer I move the stove outdoors to keep the heat down in the house. Also in an emergency situation I can light a ventless propane heater and get about 10,000 BTU's of heat. Keep in mind you are burning a lot of gas you may need for cooking if you do this. So IF you heat with propane that's more fuel you will need to store.

8. HEAT this can be as simple as putting in a large supply of cut & stacked wood and using a wood stove. But the same rule applies since no one knows just how long you will have to heat with wood be prepared.
Using your fireplace to heat your home is very wasteful as it uses 10 times more wood than a small cast iron wood stove you can set in your living room and vent it up the fireplace flue. (No one is suggesting you do anything dangerous use common sense and place a non-burning surface under the stove such as brick or a metal shallow pan filled with sand etc. to stop any embers from igniting your carpet). Also some wood stoves have a cooking surface so you can cook on your wood stove this can be handy.
Regardless how you heat your home now, you could add a large propane tank and have a small propane heater and burner to cook with. A couple hundred gallons should get you through the first winter. If you have the funds I would store about 400 to 500 gallons of propane and only use a small propane heater 10,000 to 30,000 BTU's. This will not be enough to heat a large home but will heat a small cabin or a couple rooms in your home for the winter.
Heating underground can be tricky as you will NOT want to heat with a flame or fire as this will cause certain death. If you are under ground by 6 feet you should remain fairly comfortable as it should stay about 60 degrees year around.
Another possibility (above ground) is heating with waste oil, old dirty motor oil. Mother Earth News has plans for a clean burning waste oil heater that uses NO electric power and cost about $45 to $65 to build and it puts out a tremendous amount of heat and it sips fuel about 3/4 to one quart an hour.
The fuel you can find from any restaurant (used liquid fryer oil) or oil change shops or garages for hauling away for free.
I know this waste oil heater works and works great as I built one years ago to heat a shop and it worked too good.

9. USING THE BATHROOM under ground does sound like a problem but what if you have to do it for say 6 months or more? You can buy a collapsible travel toilet that uses plastic bags that you seal up when you are done. With this system be sure you have plenty of plastic bags to use or your shelter could end up a very stinky place.
As you use food up you should have empty boxes available, you can use these to store your bagged waste in. Just a recommendation, take extra large plastic bags with you and when a food box becomes empty line the empty box with your empty large storage bag and place your smaller waste filled bags in it to store. When you can go outside take your waste bags outside and bury them someplace that’s not to close to your shelter.

What our Grand parents did was to dig a pit and build an out-house over it with a wood bench with a hole cut out and that's where you sat and did your business. The bad news is when the pit got full you would have to dig a new pit and drag the out-house over the new pit and throw dirt over the old pit to bury the waste.

10. SEEDS, you should think seriously about storing seeds for planting for food. An economic collapse is considered eminent and it could take 5 years even 10 years or more to get some kind of economy back up and running, and it may never be back the way it is today. That’s a long time to eat on your stored foods. Plan ahead. Also keep in mind you will have to have hand tools for your garden a shovel, rake, hoe etc.

Avoid GMO (Genetically Modified) Seeds especially from Monsanto as these seeds are Genetically made to grow only one crop and the seeds from the new crop WILL NOT grow a second generation of plants. Monsanto in it's infinite wisdom engineered these seeds so the new crop of seeds could NOT be used for a new crop. This way Monsanto could keep you coming back to them for more seeds.

11. MEDICAL, If you have a medical condition needing surgery or treatment you need to address that issue NOW not in December 2012. Weather it's a hip or knee replacement, cataract sergery or what ever, you know your own body take care of it NOW do not put it off as it may be to late tomorrow.
Also if you are taking medication every single day for high blood pressure or what ever, some how, some way you need to start building up a supply of these medications that you have to take every single day, for the day the pharmacy's are not open. And one can olly hope they re-open before you run out of medication.
No one is suggesting you do anything illegal but you need to be a little bit protected just in case the pharmacy's are not open.

12. POWER: Some people think they will just get a generator and a couple gallons of gas and they will be ok. I think you need to think in terms of long term use and weather or not you can get gas for your generator. Maybe you can get gas just fine now but what about 6 months AFTER the power goes out? How will you and your gas powered generator be doing then?

Some people are thinking about adding solar panels even if it's just one or two panels. And some people are adding wind turbines to add to the power generating capacity and this all helps.

You need to think about battery storage and long term use. One high priced long term deep cycle battery will be worth 1000 car batteries or more. Car batteries are not made for charging and discharging over and over and over. A typical deep cycle battery is made for repeated discharges of 75% up to about 350 times a good AGM battery can discharge 75% up to 600 times.

What you want to do is to NOT discharge your batteries more than 20 to 25% so your good AGM battery can be discharged 1000 times or more up to 25%. See why you need a good battery and why you need more amps than what you really need? (Remember we are all in this and if you can make your batteries last 15 years instead of the three years published all the better for you).

An AGM (Absorbed Glass Matte) battery is a very forgiving deep cycle battery and stands up well to deep discharges and re-charges. But you need to think about having wind up LED lights for flashlights, radios, and lanturns that way you have a backup and will never be stranded in the dark.

We recommend several systems to charge your batteries, solar panels, wind generator and a pedel powered generator and if that were not enough you could add on a steam engine to charge your batteries too.

Also you need enough reserve capacity in your batteries to run your house for up to 7 (seven) days without any sunshine or wind blowing. Never waste electricity, never take it for granted you never know but you can end up in a cloudy, windless situation for days even weeks and at some point you may find yourself with out power. In this situation it would be nice to have a peddal powered generator so you and your family can take turns peddeling to charge up your batteries.

Another promising technology is steam power. A boiler can burn about anything waste oil, paper, wood, coal even paper money. You can use your steam engine to power a generator/alternator and use that to charge your batteries and run some lights and small 12 volt appliances in your home or cabin, think about it seriously.
If you have a larger steam engine you can power 120V house current. You can pump water with a steam engine to power your water pump as well as make power.

Also you can capture the exhaust steam and pipe it into your home run it thru a radiator and heat your home too, double duty technology. Where else can you do that? Steam power makes sence for long term use and just maybe the power of the future.

Other things you may need, such as: tooth brush, shaving kit, cooking & eating utensils, coffee pot, Coffee, powder creamer, TV, DVD player, DVD movies, salt, pepper, sugar, tums or rolaids, hand gardening tools, axe, cross cut saw, hand tools, shovel, paper towels, First Aid Kit, manual can opener etc. this list can go on and on and on. But you need to put some things on this list just for you, some comfort items to make your stay a little more comfortable. Food items can be bought in bulk and stored in sealed 5 gal. plastic pails with a moisture absorbent packet.

DO NOT forget things like toilet paper, paper towels, extra wash clothes, dish towels, bath towels, and by all means DO NOT forget extra dish soap and tooth paste. Think about the things you use every day and take for-granted. If you use tooth picks-store some of them. The little things you use every day IF you store some of these items it will make your stay immeasurably easier.

If you use lots Tums then you would store LOTS and LOTS of Tums. If you never use them then store a large bottle of Tums or Rolaids, just in case. If you use a lot of something then store lots and lots of that item. IF you rarely or never use an item then you can store it - in case you need it.

You will also need bleach, just plain bleach to help disinfect questionable water even if you have lots of water filters or a hand pump do yourself a favor and store some bleach, just in case. Also you will need a supply of heavy duty trash bags since the trash man will not be running you will have to store your trash so be prepared with lots of heavy duty trash bags and a place to store the trash would be nice too. And you will need stuff like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, cotton balls, bandaids etc.

Storing gasoline can be tricky, gas breaks down into a varnish if left stored to long. You can buy gas stabalizers for long term storage. Then you have to think about where to store your gas. You never want to store it where you are doing cooking or have candles or any open flame or possible sparks. The best place is in the gas can in the garage. I would not get to hung up on storing lots of gas or diesel as if you are,then you will miss the boat when the power goes down for a long period of time. And you will find your self out of gas/diesel and therefore out of power. Think in terms of long term sustainability, in months and years.

While it is true you can buy an inverter to run your TV, DVD, coffee pot etc. why would you do that whey you can buy these things in 12 volt. By doing so you will save energy (battery power) converting 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC. I have a 400 watt inverter and it will not even power my coffee pot, it will run a couple of lights and a radio but that's about it, so I don't even use it.

Home/Cabin Cooling There are several companies that make/offer 12 volt Swamp or Evaporative coolers in high humid climates these coolers do not work as efficent as dry climates, but it could be better than nothing especially if you find yourself in sourthern Louisana in the summer. These units typically run about $1000.

If a swamp cooler is out of the question you should at least have a 12 volt fan, a fan big enough to cool several people and circulate the air in a room. A 15" to 17" 12 volt fan can use typically 100 watts of power so if you use a fan be prepared for a drain on your bateries especially if you have a small system.

15. ENTERTAINMENT/EDUCATION
In a agricultural society you must learn to go to bed when the sun goes down and arise when the sun comes up to start your day. You may be gardening, cutting firewood, pulling guard duty, hauling water etc. but everyone has a job and everyone does there job. But sometime you just have to have down time, there has to be

something you do for fun. You can rediscover your family and friends and neighbors and play board games or if you have prepared you can have a 12 volt TV & DVD player and have a movie every night for a couple of hours where everyone gathers to watch a movie. You need to put some thought into this as not all age groups will be entertained by only kids games and young kids will not be entertained by adult

games. So put some thought into this and plan for all age groups. (Keep in mind your power requirements, how much you make, how much you need, how much you use and only if you have power to spare can you have or use the 12 volt TV & DVD player).

If in your group you have a school teacher you can have him/her teach the children in your group this will take us back to the old days of the one room school house where you have several grades in the same school room. If you live in a very rural situation and you know and can work with your neighbors your security can be light. If you live in a small town you may have to band together with your neighbors for security patrols. You may also need "security window film" this film keeps your windows together in case someone tries to break in. This film is NOT designed to stop the thief but to slow him down so you have time to take action. You can find this security film on Ebay. You may also consider motion sensor units on your home to allert you when someone is near your home. I would avoid having lights that come on (on the outside) when the sensor is activated have a light come on inside your home to allert you that you have a possible intruder outside your home. These sensors can be bought on Ebay.

Also you may want to black out your windows so you do not attract attention. Also it would be a good idea to take some old cloths and throw them on your lawn making it look like your house has already been ransacked. Along with this you could take the screen door and break it down also making it look like your house has already been ransacked. Remember if undesirables are wandering your streets you will want to look as un-desirable as possible. Also, now is a good time to measure your ground floor windows and build some window covers out of plywood that you can nail in place just-in-case your windows ever get broken out. If you ever get a broke window you will be very thankful you have a window cover to nail in it's place right away.

But most important is lights, IF you have lights you probably have other stuff as well, SO you must follow strick black out procedures so that NO ONE can see any light from your house. A light from a house will attract undesirables (like a moth to a flame), just don't make it your house they are attracted to. You could take black spray paint and paint the inside and the outside of windows then go outside in the dark with all your lights on and see if you see ANY light anywhere and if so address it right away.

This is a good time to get to know your neighbors and work together with them for security taking turns watching a group of homes and sharing food, water, resources and sharing the work and responsibilities. This will be the only way we will be able to get our society back up and running, is people working together.

FREE Instructions: HOW TO MAKE BIO-DIESEL
Things You'll Need:
• 1 liter canola oil (or find a waste oil tank at a fast food restaurant or any regular restaurant will have a waste oil tank somewhere for the used oil from there fryers. Skim off floating residue from the oil and collect the nearly clear liquid underneath. - Just be sure you are using pure vegetable oil.)
• 200 ml methanol (sold as solvent by paint companies)
• At least 6 grams lye (KOH) (from soapmakers' or chemical supply)
• Blender
• Scale accurate to 0.1 grams
• 2 measuring beakers
• 1/2-liter No. 2 plastic translucent container with screw top
• 2-liter soda bottles
• Funnels
• Candy thermometer

1. Step 1
Pour the methanol (you can substitute HEET the fuel additive as it's mostly methanol)into the 1/2-liter container using a funnel. The lye can be potassium (KOH) or sodium (NaOH) hydroxide. This recipe uses KOH. Measure it according to its purity: 5.8 grams for 85 percent pure, 5.5 grams for 90 percent, 5.3 grams for 92 percent. Pour the lye into the container using a clean funnel. Swirl the container until the mixture is clear. The result is methoxide.

2. Step 2
Heat the oil in a pan until the thermometer shows 130 F. Pour it into the blender. Carefully add the methoxide and mix on low speed for 30 minutes. Pour it into one of the soda bottles and let settle for 12 to 24 hours.

3. Step 3
Glycerine, a 20 percent byproduct, will separate and fall to the bottom. Decant the top 80 percent into a clean soda bottle. Don't allow any glycerine in.

4. Step 4
Test the quality of the fuel . Pour 1/2 liter of water into it. Shake vigorously. Let it settle. If the fuel completely separates from the water within 30 minutes, it's good. Decant the fuel from the water into a clean soda bottle. But if it continues to look like mayonnaise, start over with more-precise measurements.

5. Step 5
Wash any remaining impurities from the biodiesel. Washing is done by forcing air bubbles through the fuel or, easier for home brewers, mixing it with water. Pour 1/2 liter of water into the fuel. Roll the bottle on a flat surface until the two liquids become homogeneous. Let it settle for at least three hours. Separate the fuel and water either by decanting from the top or draining the water from the bottom via a hole. Repeat the washing.

6. Step 6
Let the fuel settle. When it turns completely translucent, it's ready to use.

Cook oil in a large container and skim off any solids floating after cooking.
Use 5 parts of cooking oil and 1 part HEET (methanol) add 1/2 tablespoon of LYE and seal the opening and shake vigorously for several minutes. Take the cap off and allow to cool then filter into your tank. (for use with diesel engines ONLY)

Using granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water is a two step process.

1.To make a stock of chlorine solution (do not drink this!) dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (about one-quarter of an ounce) of high-test (78%) granular calcium hypochlorite for each two gallons (eight liters) of water.

2.To disinfect water add one part of the chlorine solution to 100 parts water to be treated.

3.Let the mixture sit for at least one-half hour before drinking.
Be sure to obtain the dry granular calcium hypochlorite since once it is made into a liquid solution it will begin to degrade and eventually become useless as a disinfecting agent. This also means you should make your treated drinking water in small batches, for example enough for a few weeks at a time at most.

Another plus for using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water for emergency use is that a little goes a very long way. A 1-pound pag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form typically costs only a few $US dollars and can be obtained in any swimming pool supply section of your hardware store or online. This amount will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water, which is enough for a family of four for some six or seven years at a gallon per day per person!

Calcium hypochlorite will store for a long period of time and remain effective as a chemical drinking water treatment. So get rid of the household bleach and buy a can of Calcium hypochlorite for your disaster emergency water disinfection needs. It lasts far longer and treats far more water than the traditional chlorine bleach water disinfection treatment.
